This month has seen colder weather throughout the UK, with more snow and single digit temperatures expected to continue. For many, this will mean a rising cost in energy bills. As our last instalment for the Big Energy Saving Winter campaign, we’ll be reviewing some of the ways you can save on your energy bills this month and throughout the rest of winter.

Upgrading your heating and insulation

You can save around £75 a year if you install and use a room thermostat, a programmer or thermostatic radiator valves. These will help you keep a consistent temperature and control over your heat. Choosing an electric heating system, like radTherm, that allows you to programme your heating and control each radiator individually is also a great way to reduce heat waste.

Insulating your home (loft, walls and floor) can also help you save money on your energy bills. You might also be eligible for a Green Homes Grant to help pay for these upgrades.

Draught-proofing your home and turning off appliances

Draught-proofing windows, doors and blocking cracks in floors and skirting boards can save around £25 a year on energy bills. While installing a water efficient shower head could save a household of 4 people around £38 off your electricity bill and around £53 a year off your water bills. You can also consider upgrading to a more eco-friendly water heating system, like Sunamp, which heats your water on demand.

Turning your appliances off standby mode can save you £35 per year. You can also make savings in your kitchen by using a bowl to wash-up, reduce your washing machine use by 1 cycle a week, and only fill the kettle with the water you need can save you £39 per year.

Replacing your bulbs with energy efficient LEDs can save you about £40 a year on bills. By switching your lights off when you’re not using them, you can save about £15 a year on your energy bills.

Check if you have a voucher available

There are many other ways to save money on your energy bills. You can look at switching energy providers, checking if you’re eligible for any vouchers, or you can find more advice from the Energy Saving Trust on how to improve your home so it doesn’t lose heat.
